about Jenny

Educational Background

Jenny holds a degree in Social Work and a Masters of Couple and Family Therapy obtained at the University of NSW. In 2021, Jenny became a Certified Gottman Couples Therapist and in 2023 trained in Canada to be a Level 1 Trainer. Jenny is now a Level 1 and Level 2 Trainer of the Gottman Method Couples Therapy, making her one of five trainers at this level in Australia.

Professional Experience

Jenny began her career in 1995 in Adult Community Mental Health in Western Sydney, working on a crisis mental health team. She then worked with young people experiencing first episode psychosis. Following this, she worked with adolescents and families at Westmead Hospital’s Department of Child, Adolescent, and Family Psychiatry (Redbank House) for seven years. Jenny later moved to private practice, first at the Family Systems Institute in Neutral Bay, then at The Hills Clinic in Hornsby. She is now based in her own rooms located at Gordon.

Workshops and Approach

Jenny has presented workshops on enhancing secure attachments, teaching emotion regulation in children, and promoting resilience, along with strategies for families where a loved one has a mental illness. She has also run workshops for the Macquarie University Psychology Program on working with families. Jenny uses a person-centered approach, emphasizing the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for change. She aims to help clients experience their emotions as important and tolerable, enabling them to make sense of their emotions and live life with more control, satisfaction, and freedom.

Therapeutic Techniques and Training

Jenny is a Certified Gottman Therapist, trained in Family Systems Theory, which focuses on interpersonal and relationship dynamics rather than a person’s personality or diagnosis, while recognizing the interplay between the interpersonal and intrapersonal. She has been trained in Bowen Family Systems Theory, which highlights the role of family of origin in present relationships, and Milan Family Systems. The importance of early attachment relationships is also a key part of her work.

In addition to a foundation in family systems work and Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Jenny is familiar with the following approaches:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Techniques
  • Mindfulness Strategies
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Schema Therapy
  • Emotionally Focused Couples Work
  • Training parents to use the Positive Parenting Program

Jenny provides supervision for other health professionals and is listed on the AASW supervision register. She has worked in teams where supervision has been provided via the use of one-way screens and has also had individual professional supervision, group supervision and peer supervision/mentoring.
